Brazil: tax on lottery prizes

In Brazil the announced lottery prize is already net: Caixa withholds 30% income tax at source before announcing it. An announced prize of R$ 100,000,000 comes from a prize of about R$ 142,857,143 before tax, of which R$ 42,857,143 went to income tax.

How the tax works

Caixa announces prizes already net of the 30% income tax it withholds at source; the winner receives the announced amount and reports it on the annual return as income taxed exclusively at source.

Games covered: Mega-Sena, Mega da Virada, Lotofácil, Quina and the other Caixa lotteries.

Questions

Do I pay tax on a Mega-Sena prize in Brazil?

The 30% income tax is withheld at source, so the announced prize is what you receive. You still report it on the annual income tax return, as income taxed exclusively at source.

Is the announced jackpot before or after tax?

After tax: the announced amount is already net of the income tax.
