Portugal: tax on lottery prizes
Portugal taxes lottery prizes at 20% of the part of each prize above €5,000, withheld when the prize is paid. For a EUR 20,000 prize (€20,000), the tax is €3,000 and the winner receives €17,000.
How the tax works
Stamp duty (imposto do selo) of 20% on the part of the prize above EUR 5,000, withheld by Santa Casa when the prize is paid; the prize is not declared on the income tax return.
Games covered: Euromilhões, Totoloto, Lotaria Clássica, Lotaria Popular, Raspadinha (Santa Casa games).
